Mike Hanlin - Fly Fisherman
Mike Hanlin is doing fly fishing CORRECTLY. How do I know? Let me tell you. We were prefect strangers when we met on the stream in Erie PA. He was entering the stream from my back side and as I checked to make sure it was clear of people, as you are supposed to do with others around, he gave me a wave - confirming he was coming up behind me. (correct) His roll cast was smooth and targeted. (correct) As he swung his woolly bugger, his line from the fly to his hand had no slack. (correct) His presentation was calculated with a single BB sinker about 20” from his fly for the stretch we were fishing. (correct) Soon he set the hook and connected with a nice 7lb Steelhead. Holding his rod at the 11o’clock position to fight the fish, he was able to tire the fish out and bring him in for an easy net job by lifting the head as he slid the net under the fish. (correct) He repeated this activity for 7 fish within an hour and a half timeline. But it was what happened next that earned him the crown of a “True Fly Fisherman”. As I watched him in action and complimented him on his activity and skill… he then offered me one of his flies. (correct) He said, “here have one of my flies… helping other fly fisherman on the stream is what fly fishing is all about, right”? (correct). What a great moment! You see, fly fishing is not just about catching fish with flies but it presents the opportunity to help and share with others and make new friends. THAT is what makes a true fly fisherman. Great job Mike. I look forward to staying in touch with you for years to come.
