December 2023 - Trip of the Month -Steelhead Fly Fishing - Erie PA

Early December 2023 — Gary Winner, Brian Westphalen and Mike Hanlin

The stream had been extremely low the entire month of November. But at the very beginning of December, a nice rain / snow storm hit the area and brought the water up to perfect fishing levels and clarity! Brian and I drove the 9 hour trek to our favorite hotel by the stream. Temperatures were at a high of a balmy 45 degrees during the day and the lows were a bit “frosty” but no ice was forming on the guides while we were casting! PERFECT weather for Steelhead in Erie PA.

Fish were caught on homemade egg patterns, Zonkers, Beads, Prince Nymphs, streamers and other flies. Sunday was a picture perfect day. We got blown off the water on Monday which lead to excellent conditions Tuesday and Wednesday.
